Hands On Impression – Call of Duty Black Ops 2 Wii U

Activation finally announced Black Ops 2 this past Thursday. It’s about time and it may be the best version yet.

While there are still so many questions to be answer, like DLC and preorder bonuses (Nuketown 2025), one thing that is confirmed, is that the game will supposedly run at 1080p with 60 frames per second. To the surprise of everyone at the show, the game was playable in the form of local multiplayer.

Let’s get it out of the way; the game looks every bit as good as the PS3 and Xbox version. On top of which, the game can be played on the gamepad. When played on the small screen, it still looks absolutely stunning.

Thanks to the second screen, you can change your weapons on the fly and get a nice view of all your classes. During gameplay, you get a full map which came in handy when the UAV was activated or simple tapping the map for your kill streak. In past COD games, you would have to press start to see a full map but it would freeze your game and make you open to be attacked.

Another nice feature for the Wii U version is control options. You will be able to use the Gamepad, Classic Controller Pro or the Wii Remote and Nun chunk. The gamepad took a bit getting used to considering that the shoulder buttons aren’t as close as the PS3 Controller or the X-Box 360 Controller but at the same time, it was easy enough to reach every button with no problem. The pro controller felt a bit more natural and the shoulder buttons were closer together. However, I still felt the gamepad felt more comfortable and easier to play with. Either option will work, just need to play some more with them to get used to either one.

Multiplayer is where the second screen comes in very handy. One player gets the TV and the pro controller while the second player gets the gamepad. This mode will offer the best online co-op play seen to date. As it’s like getting your own personal screen, while still sitting next to each other.

I did ask about voice chat, and the official word I got is that they are working on a headset and couldn’t comment on using the gamepad’s mic.

Only one stage was available during the event. Call of Duty is a major game for the Wii U and no release date has been set. Many questions are still unanswered but the two most important ones have been. We are getting Black Ops 2 and it looks just good or better than the other versions.
